Conflict In Focus
Sri Lanka - A Lasting Peace

The 25-year civil war ended in May, but the peace is fragile. Whether Sri Lanka enjoys long-term peace will depend largely on how the Government in victory treats its Tamil minority.
Sri Lanka Conflict 2009
• Refugees Treated as Prisoners.
Up to 300,000 Tamil Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been held at state internment camps. It is absolutely unprecedented for any government anywhere to treat IDPs in its care as prisoners. Today, almost 150,000 IDPs remain in the camp system.

• Rapid Military Build-up. Sri Lanka is increasing its Army by 50% to 'enforce peace' in the Tamil-populated regions.

•  A Controlled Media. Journalists who question Government policies fear sanctions and reprisals.

VOICE FROM THE FIELD
"Unbowed and Unafraid"
Excerpts from a powerful, chilling and prescient article written by the editor of The Sunday Leader (a Sri Lankan newspaper) days before he was murdered.

"People often ask me why I take such risks and tell me it is a matter of time before I am bumped off. Of course I know that: it is inevitable. But if we do not speak out now, there will be no one left to speak for those who cannot, whether they be ethnic minorities, the disadvantaged or the persecuted… "

"No other profession calls on its practitioners to lay down their lives for their art save the armed forces - and, in Sri Lanka , journalism…"

"[The Sunday Leader] staff will fight on, unbowed and unafraid..." FULL ARTICLE

Peace on Earth
. This is the season of hope, joy, and optimism. This is the season of peace.

Over the past year, thanks to generous donations from our supporters, Pragmora was able to establish its first global advocacy campaign (to stablise the peace in Sri Lanka) and to begin work on two more campaigns (Somalia and Afghanistan). Future donations will allow us to complete the necessary work to launch more advocacy campaigns in the new year that will help resolve other wars and conflicts around the world.

"Peace on earth" can be more than a wish — it can be an action as well.

SOUTH OSSETIA–
The Cold War's Proxy War
For now, a ceasefire holds between Georgia and its South Ossetian rebels (who are supported by Russia). The region remains unstable, however, because the underlying issue of Ossetian separatist aspirations has not been resolved, and because the conflict has evolved into a proxy war between Russia and NATO. Coming Soon...
Pragmora will be posting information to our website on more and more conflicts, and will develop new advocacy campaigns for non-violent conflict resolution. Up next… Somalia, Afghanistan and Darfur!
